The Karneval von Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered the second largest carnival in the world after Rio de Janeiro. Galas, competitions, parades and large street parties take place in the island's capital over several weeks.
Significant events include the election of the Carnival Queen and the Murgas and Comparsas competitions. Numerous music, dance and carnival groups present elaborate costumes, choreographies and specially developed programs.
The street carnival in Santa Cruz begins with the Cabalgata. At the final Coso, carnival queens, comparsas, murgas, music groups and floats parade through the city. In between, the celebrations continue at daytime events and large street parties.
