The Guardia Civil Playa de las Américas is a Spanish state police unit with military status. Typical for them are special responsibilities on highways, on coasts and borders as well as in ports and airports.
The Guardia Civil monitors traffic on extra-urban roads, controls coasts and borders and combats smuggling and illegal movement of goods. Weapons and explosives as well as natural and environmental crimes are also part of their special tasks.
The Policía Nacional is responsible, among other things, for identity cards, passports and many foreign matters. The Policía Local primarily takes care of local traffic and municipal order. The Guardia Civil is particularly recognizable for its tasks on highways, at borders and coasts as well as in ports and airports.
